Board members

Overview of the KCGH board members and their roles.

Joyce Browne

President

Joyce Browne is an associate professor and researcher at UMC Utrecht. Her area of work includes global health, reducing health disparities and safe pregnancies. She mainly conducts research in Ghana, co-founded the Dutch Global Health Film Festival and sits on the Supervisory Board of Simavi as chair of KCGH.

Jaco J. Verweij

Secretary

Jaco Verweij received his PhD from Leiden University on molecular diagnostics of intestinal parasites. From 1990 to 2012, he worked at the Department of Parasitology of the LUMC, where he developed and implemented new DNA detection techniques. Since 2012, he has been a medical molecular microbiologist and parasitologist at the Elisabeth-Tweesteden Hospital in Tilburg, with a great passion for education, technology transfer and capacity building.

Remko Schats

Treasurer

Remko Schats is a physician and holds a PhD in malaria vaccines, with experience from international missions and various board positions in Global Health. He recently completed an executive MBA at Erasmus University and launched Enigma Global e-Health, a platform connecting healthcare professionals, patients and institutions. In addition to his role at KCGH, he is treasurer of the NvTG.

Mariëlle Bemelmans

Board member

Mariëlle Bemelmans (PhD, MPH) has over 25 years of experience in management and consultancy on policy and advocacy, focusing on Human Resources for Health, health systems, financing, sexual and reproductive health and HIV/AIDS. She has worked in DRC, Kenya, Malawi and Zimbabwe, among others, and is committed to equity in global health.

Ankie van den Broek

Board member

After her tropical training, Ankie worked for 12 years in Angola, Tanzania and Zambia at the intersection of curative care and community health. Back in the Netherlands, she advised NGOs through MCS, IC Consult and KIT, and is active as a self-employed person at Global Health Advies. She represents OIGT within KCGH and volunteers at Dokters van de Wereld.

Eelco Jacobs

Board member

Eelco Jacobs (MSc, PhD) is a specialist in healthcare governance, policy and financing with over 15 years of international experience. He works on monitoring and evaluation, capacity building and programme management and leads the Centre for Health Systems in Vulnerable and Conflict-Affected Environments at KIT.

Bruce Mutsvairo

Board member

Bruce Mutsvairo is professor of Media, Politics and the Global South at Utrecht University. He leads the Media, Data and Citizenship research team and investigates the relationship between journalism, technology and democracy in non-Western contexts. Internationally, he is co-director of the Global Risk Journalism Hub.

Seriana van den Berg

SDG3 alliance coordinator

Seriana van den Berg is a physician and medical anthropologist. She developed national programmes for Doctors of the World in the Netherlands and worked in Sudan, Pakistan, West Papua, Suriname and Mayotte. After her MPH at Columbia University, she was WHO focal point and health attaché in Geneva. Now she advises independently and is a practice support worker in Amsterdam North. Within the board, she coordinates the SDG3 alliance.
