Conducting socially responsible research

The guideline ‘Socially Responsible Research’ was developed to support (future) researchers in the socially responsible design, conduct and dissemination of (bio)medical research.

This practical guideline includes a checklist, useful links and tools and reflective questions on topics such as open science, evidence-based research, equitable participation, practice implementation and environmental sustainability.

Why?

In practice, despite good intentions, research often fails to meet the needs of society. For instance, research is regularly conducted into questions that could actually already be adequately answered by existing literature, marginalised groups are often not included in research and (bio)medical research is associated with a large negative environmental impact. This guide aims to make (future) researchers aware of the complexity and responsibility involved in scientific research.

For whom?

The guide was written for students and teachers, but is valuable for anyone involved in (bio)medical research.

Establishment

This guideline was developed within the Faculty of Medicine at UMC Utrecht, from the Planetary Health Integration Team. This first version was created with the help of various experts in the field of different types of (bio)medical research, diversity and inclusion and sustainability. Just as society and science are constantly evolving, this document will continue to adapt to new insights.
