New tool supports healthcare professionals in applying the right to health in practice

IFHHRO | Medical Human Rights Network, a working group of NSGH, has launched two new practical tools that support healthcare professionals in integrating the right to health in their daily work: the Right to Health Assessment Tool and the corresponding e-learning module Making the Right to Health Workable for Health Professionals.

Although the right to health is internationally recognised as a human right and an important standard of patient care, many healthcare professionals lack practical tools to apply these principles in daily practice. The new tools aim to narrow this gap by providing concrete support that matches the realities of healthcare.

Right to Health Assessment Tool

The Right to Health Assessment Tool is a practical questionnaire for healthcare providers, managers and other professionals within the healthcare sector. The tool helps users assess the extent to which their working environment and healthcare practices are in line with internationally recognised standards around the right to health.

The tool consists of a concise set of questions based on the AAAQ framework, which focuses on: Availability, Accessibility, Affordability and Quality.

The assessment tool was developed to support reflection, dialogue and quality improvement within healthcare institutions. The impetus for the development was an extensive analysis of existing resources, which showed that there was no accessible tool available specifically aimed at healthcare professionals.

The tool is available as a fillable Word Document.

E-learning module

The e-learning module ‘Making the Right to Health Workable for Health Professionals’ shows how principles around health and human rights, including the right to health and the AAAQ framework, can be practically applied in everyday healthcare practice.

The online module takes about 45 minutes and can be taken independently or used in preparation for using the assessment tool.

Both tools were developed within IFHHRO's initiative Dignity at the Bedside, with support from KCGH.
