Mental health care for refugees and asylum seekers

Webinar

How accessible is mental health care for refugees and asylum seekers in the Netherlands? And what challenges do healthcare providers face in practice?

Refugees and asylum seekers are at increased risk of mental health problems. This is not only due to their experiences of war and violence, but also to the uncertainty and stress they face during the asylum process in the Netherlands. How can we ensure that this group receives appropriate mental health care?

During this webinar, GP Marike Ooms and psychiatrist Erik van Twillert share their experiences and perspectives on mental health care within the asylum system. Marike Ooms talks about her experiences at the asylum seekers’ centre in Hoogeveen, where she drew attention to the quality of care. Erik van Twillert shares his insights from the Dimence Group’s Network Centre for Transcultural Psychiatry.

Together, they will discuss the challenges and opportunities for improving mental health care for refugees and asylum seekers. This will be followed by a session for questions and discussion.

The webinar is organised by the Department of Transcultural Psychiatry of the Dutch Association for Psychiatry (NVvP), in collaboration with the Global Mental Health Working Group of the Netherlands Society for Global Health (NSGH) and the Global Health Knowledge Centre (KCGH).

Haar eerste ervaring hiermee deed zij in 1997, tijdens haar coschappen in Soedan.
